TOOB and curved screen experience
Who says that we are in a flatscreen age with the TOOB? The TOOB allows a user one of those domed theater experiences, but in your household.
So you no longer have to go to an expo/world’s fair/amusement park/science center to experience one of those omni dome theaters. The TOOB provides the same basic experience, though on a considerably smaller scale. Created by Alexander McDonnell, the TOOB consists of a half-dome movie screen that’s large enough for a couple of people to sit in front of, as well as a specially shaped mirror that reflects the image from a projector onto the dome’s surface. And since it’s powered by a regular home theater projector (instead of proprietary hardware) you can use it with any video source like a DVD player or a gaming console.
The Toob is powered by a projector from a home theater, and allows the user to plug anything into it, such as a video games system or DVD player. I am guessing that the user lays down in front of it and feels an immersed experience.
I’m guessing that this experience is limited to the amount of people lying down in front of it. I don’t really know if these photos do it justice for what it can really do. I mean, just imagine being right in front of that alligator.
So who needs 3D on our TVs, right? This sort of reminds me of the time I was watching the first Lord of the Rings in the theater, and the curved screen sort of made the experience more grand. I had to shift my focus to see objects in the distance, and it sort of felt like I was in Middle Earth itself.
Well, if you want this 3 foot by 6 foot TOOB, it will cost you. It costs about $1,440, and there is an 8 foot by 16 foot inflatable version. That might be good for movie parties in a public park, or something.
