Palm Pixi

Palm is planning soon to launch its new smartphone working on its proprietary webOS. The device is supposedly the successor of Palm Centro smartphone and will be Palm’s second webOS device, after Palm Pre. The device named Palm Pixi, was officially announced Palm_Pixion September 8, 2009, and is expected to be released by the end of 2009.

As per the specification provided by Palm on their website, the Pixi will feature a 2.63-inch capacitive touchscreen with a vibrant 18-bit color 320×400 screen resolution Sub-HVGA display. The weight of the device will be 99.5 grams and the dimensions will be 55.0mm x  111.0mm x 10.85mm.

Pixi will contain features like “Palm Synergy”, which brings together related information & presents it in one simple view or the “App Catalog” which gives you a choice of titles to download, many of which are integrated with other apps on the phone. Also unlike iPhone it will have the ability to keep multiple applications open at once, so more than one thing can be done at a time. Contacts in Pixi can be pulled directly from places like Facebook, Google, Microsoft Office Outlook, or from the combination of all the supported social sites. Also it is pretty easy to find out if the contacts are online either under AIM Instant Messenger, Google Talk, or Yahoo! Messenger. Pixi comes with a 2 MP camera and an LED flash. Songs can be directly downloaded from Amazon MP3 store and can be played with their own album art. Also the DRM-free iTunes music, videos, and photos are easily transferable. Applications are easily downloadable from the App Catalog in the phone.

Pixi runs on Dual-band CDMA2000 and have 3G as well as EvDO. The email is handled using Microsoft Exchange with Direct Push Technology. It also supports Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, AOL, Hotmail, etc. using POP3/IMAP. It has a built in GPS and have ambient light, accelerometer & proximity built into it. The audio formats supported are MP3, AAC, AAC+, AMR, QCELP, WAV whereas video formats supported are Mpeg4, H.263, H.264. It has an internal memory of 8GB in which 7GB is available for users. It comes with 3.5mm stereo socket and a MicroUSb connector with USB 2.0 Hi-Speed.

The Pixi is expected to release at the end of 2009 and made available exclusively on the Sprint carrier network.
